BCI – The exploration just continues to get interesting

Brain computer interfaces started off as a complex theory with limited amount of technology. But with the tremendous pace of technological growth, we’ve come closer to exploring potentially significant areas of the brain. This in turn has helped speed up the research for clinical applications. The rate of neurological diseases have been in a significant increase and even though there is a lot that has been done in brain research, the technological advancements have not been really put into practical practice yer.

“Emotion is the system that tells us how important something is.”

“Attention focuses us on the important and away from the unimportant things.”

Sharp Brains

BCIs were initially introduced as an invasive technology which required surgery for the electrodes to be placed directly onto the brain surface. Modern day technology has blessed the existence of non invasive BCIs which would simply override the need to have a complex surgery. The introduction of dry electrodes has been the biggest eye catching feature as BCIs with dry electrodes could just be placed on the top of the head with the dry electrodes also known as channels. Below are a couple of images of invasive and non invasive BCI from various companies like Emotiv and Neuralink

In additional to the existing clinical applications including controlling electric wheel chairs and robotic arms, BCIs have now been involved in neurorehabilitation and neuroprosthetics. Refer to the latest advancements to check and complete this paragraph

The potential market value of this technology is close to the billion dollar mark. A number of research institutes across the globe including technology based companies have already invested a good amount of money in neurotechnology. The current research in the BCI market has enabled us to move a step even further, giving rise to neural data, mobility and communication

A lot of research is being done in this arena and so many more exciting technologies are expected to arrive with time. These devices or products will greatly enhance a lot of existing shortcomings and will focus more on the individual perspective. The control will be given to the individual which greatly marks the level of independency immaterial of the disability or the disorder.
